A Lull in the Sea (Nagi-Asu: Nagi no Asukara) Review

Updated: Jan 18

Should we trust in science or in religion when it comes to the origin to humanity? If we trust in science, should we trust in the theory that life began in the sea? This anime explores the idea where humanity evolved underwater and some people decided to leave the safety of the sea to live on land losing their ability to breathe underwater. Together, those who remained in the sea and those who decided to live on land must work to please the sea god. They must achieve this goal before the sea people begin hibernation. Unsuccessfully, some of the sea children get trapped in the sea during the hibernation period. Five years later, the children begin to wake up and work together to save their families who are still stuck in hibernation.

I left out a lot of detail to the story since it would spoil the anime if you were to watch it. I think it is worth the watch. The art was well done, and the dialogue was not too much. I think the storyline created a sense of emotion strong enough for the viewer to feel the emotion alongside the characters. There is clear growth within numerous characters; those who were racist towards the sea people were friendly by the end of the series, as an example. This anime is not slow paced nor is it fast paced. However, I do not notice a fluctuation between the two paces. The consistent speed could be nice for some people, though it made it difficult for me to keep watching. I think there are moments within the anime that could be expanded upon if they were to do a movie or another season. However, for 26 episodes, there is a lot that happens. Parts of the narrative could be missed if you do not pay enough attention.

I did enjoy the series, it was entertaining. I thought it had an intriguing storyline. I will definitely watch this again. Now that you know what I think of this anime, tell me what you think. This is Skyler signing off for now, UNTIL NEXT TIME!!
