.Hack// Review

Updated: Oct 25

This is a review of .Hack//. There are four seasons, a movie and several games for this seemingly old anime. I personally have not played the games; however, I have researched that playing the games will help in understanding this anime as there are parts referenced in the anime from the games and vice versa. I found this anime on a website which I will be adding at the bottom of this post. The names of the seasons will make it very confusing as they are named similarly to the games which none of which are numbered. Though, I have researched that as well so you can start your .Hack// journey.

As I mentioned before, I have not played the games and am not able to provide any insight on said games. However, I have seen the series itself. It was not too difficult to follow along even without playing the games. The art style of the anime suggests it is an older anime which makes it difficult to watch in the modern age. That being said, if you can get past to art style, the story line provides an excellent plot that seems well thought out and intriguing. The anime follows a couple of regular gamers whose avatars previously belonged to some hackers. Within the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) "The world" the gamers must attempt to save the game from the glitches and other avatars seeking to destroy it.

Starting with .Hack//Sign being the first season of the anime it contains 28 episodes. Following that would be .Hack infection, .Hack Mutation, .Hack Outbreak, .Hack Quarantine, and .Hack Fragment, all of which are games to play. .Hack// Liminality is a 4 episode season where supposedly each episode was released with one of the games I previously mentioned (Ep.1 with infection, Ep.2 with mutation, Ep.3 with outbreak, and Ep.4 with quarantine). After watching this season, the following seasons is .Hack// Legend of the Twilight (12 episodes), then .Hack// Roots (26 episodes). Playing Vol. 1-3 of .Hack G.U. is next, followed by .Hack Link. The OVA (Original Video Animation) .Hack// Quantum has three episodes which is next to watch. Finally, the movie as well as the final game (.Hack// Versus) which seemingly came together.

My personal opinion of the anime is that it was a good one to watch. The storyline is engaging. Regarding the style of the artwork, I do not think it brings a lot of people in to watch it in the modern age. However, if the artwork was updated, the number of viewers will likely increase as the artwork in combination to the storyline brings a sense of emotion and tension to the series that is missing in the current style. Regardless of this, I believe it to be one that should be seen at least once.

I find myself wanting to watch it again. Prior to watching the anime originally, I did not know about the games. Now that I know about them, I am considering watching the anime and then finding the games to play them all in the proper order. As this is my first review, I hope that you forgive me on being an amateur and with your feedback I hope to improve my next review. You now know what I think of this series, let me know what you think. This is Skyler signing off for now, UNTIL NEXT TIME!!
